MEMORIES
I last saw King Diamond at The Ritz Theatre (It was called The Ritz back in those days)
during the "Conspiracy" tour....way
back around 1991 (or was it 1989? Then it was changed
to The Arlington Theater and
finally it was torn down a few years ago).
The first King Diamond recording
I ever heard was "Them". I saw the full page ad
in Metal Maniacs (or it could
have been RIP), and decided I wanted to hear what
it was all about. When I got
it home, I ripped the plastic off the cassette (I know...I'm old!) and
popped it into my stereo, and with lyrics in hand, commenced to listen
to the entire
recording, while following
the lyrics. From that moment I was hooked! I didn't move from the same
spot the whole time the tape played, and at the end, I got a satisfying
scare from the sudden locking of the door. It was like taking acid for
the first time, except somehow cleaner. I have always loved horror stories.
I've been reading novelists like Stephen King, Alfred Hitchcock, and Ray
Bradbury since I was old enough to read, and the music that King Diamond
produced, along with the powerful lyrics were just as good or better than
any horror novel. I then went to the store and bought "Abigail". Then,
I just had to have all the tapes that I could get my hands on.
